Hockey is a fast-moving and fluid sport that has traditionally not lent itself to the same statistical number-crunching that engages fans of baseball or football. Well, hockey loving stats-geeks may be in for a whole new puck-game as a partnership between the National Hockey League (NHL) and SAP promises to bring a new level of interactivity for fans.
Powered by SAP HANA, the revamped NHL team statistics section, launched in February on NHL.com, allows fans to manipulate the stats in all kinds of ways. In this video, Chris Foster, the NHL's director of digital business development, discusses what these changes are and what they mean for hockey fans. The interview took place at SAPPHIRE Now 2015, held in Orlando in May.
"SAP is powering the new stats section on NHL.com, something that was really underserved -- I think that we were not doing a great job in the past," Foster says in the video. "We launched the new stats section in February, and with that is a complete new look and feel, a really great design with a smart user experience and clean navigation, and then adding visuals and a higher level of advanced filtering that our fans have never been able to do before."
This is just scratching the surface, Foster explains, as the league has embarked on a five-year plan to digitize all of the recorded stats in the league's long and storied history. Eventually, fans will be able to use the same visualizations and advanced filtering on these historical stats. He also explains how mobility will enhance the NHL user experience.
