NetWeaver vs. third-party portals

Wondering about third-party portals? Which ones compete with NetWeaver? Is it worth it to consider other options? Analyst Joshua Greenbaum advises a reader who is weighing the options.

Hi,

We are in the process of evaluating the integration of SAP R/3 (ESS) with a non-SAP portal (e.g. BEA Weblogic, IBM Websphere).

Can you tell us what are the pros and cons of each integration and the advantages / disadvantages of using SAP NetWeaver? We're currently in SAP R/3 4.6C.

You don't say why you feel compelled to look at a third-party portal, so hopefully there's a strong business case for this decision. Because it doesn't make sense to spend a lot of cycles on what is more of a commodity than a strategic piece of software.

In general, I would recommend simplifying your technology choices by limiting the number of vendors you work with, and considering that SAP has an excellent portal in NetWeaver, I have trouble imagining what would be so pressing to push you in a different direction. I would first re-visit the reasons why you are thinking of a third-party portal and make sure they are valid and defendable.
