I am wondering about the object type SELFITEM. I am reading SAP's OSS note 183453 that talks about using this function to send email from within your workflow, but I am confused on where you would enter the list of email recipients. I have just a condition as this is supposed to address, but I don't see where this data is added. Perhaps you could provide some insight on this one.
The recipient of the emails are entered into the AGENTS entry box. All the agents assigned there will receive the description of the work item. As of recently releases (I believe it is 4.6x) SAP has provided a new SENDMAIL step which greatly simplifies this approach.
If you are on earlier releases and you want to see some examples of how this is done:
1. Go to the Business Object Repository (transaction SWO1)
2. Enter SELFITEM as the object type
3. Hit the 'Where-Used' button.
4. Select TASKS and hit enter
The results displayed are a list of TASKS that use the SELFITEM object. You should be able to use those as an example.
