Building new servers with the same names and IPs as the preexisting system

We are in the planning stages of upgrading our SAP ECC 5.0 landscape (hardware and OS only) and are trying to come up with the best way to build the new servers. The issue we are trying to overcome is how to build the new servers with the same names and IPs while still running our existing servers.

I can understand that you want to keep your SID and instance number when copying the SAP landscape. But why keep the hostnames and IP addresses?

The best solution is to use virtual host names. The virtual hostname is an alias in DNS linked to a physical server. Every SAP GUI, interface and even possible, SAP itself connects to this virtual host. If the hostname changes, only the DNS alias needs to change to switch from one system to the next, to make the system accessible.
