lacking, so we're looking into 3rd party add-ons, like I2, Manugistics, etc. Could you shed some light on why we should NOT go to a third party for additional functionality please? Or tell me where to get this type of information or a features and function matrix comparing the advantages / disadvantages of APO vs. 3rd party software. Thanks in advance for your advice.
There is one very significant benefit of APO over the other advanced planning systems and that is integration. Most people concentrate on functionality when they assess APS and lose sight of how they will integrate it. This is a critical element of the project and if you can not successfully and robustly transfer the data then a lot of the benefits of the APS are negated.
For the comparison of the various APO systems there is a very good book "Supply Chain Management and Advanced Planning" by Hartmut Stadtler (Editor), Christoph Kilger (Editor). This book gives a vast amount of information on "The Supply Chain" and in particular details the major Advanced Planning Systems.
