I am into ABAP programming and has 20 months of experience in MM, HR, SD and PM. I have 3 years of maintenance experience. Where do I go from here? Should I opt for PM functional? If so, how do I get started?
It's hard to get a handle on your current skills the way you have presented them. What matters the most is what you've done most recently. It sounds to me like you might be splitting your time between ABAP and functional work right now. It's really a misconception to think that you can simply pick an area of SAP and move into it. In this market, you choose the best projects you can, and simply try to keep your skills as current as possible. You might want to get into PM, but if the only job you can get is ABAP, then you're stuck in ABAP - and that's not necessarily a bad thing. You have to start with the skills you're using now, and make logical transitions from there. Jumping from one area to another is quite difficult right now. Having said that, your maintenance background does seem to lend itself towards a PM position. I will be answering a question on the future of the PM module this month that you might want to take a look at. But since you only have three years of maintenance experience, don't worry if you're not able to move into PM. It's not like you're turning your back on an entire career path. Your best bet is to go where the opportunities take you, and make the absolute most out of the projects you are on. The better you perform, the more challenges will be thrown your way. Go where those challenges take you.
