SAP is providing an alternative to a slew of small integration vendors with a new tool it says will help speed the implementation of its NetWeaver platform with business applications and systems.
NetWeaver Rapid Installer comes with of prepackaged business scenarios and predefined configurations for SAP's ERP software suite. The tool includes a Wizard-based installation process, which provides guidance in setting up the portal platform, knowledge management and collaboration capabilities, along with a Java application server.
NetWeaver technologies include the enterprise portal; business intelligence and master data management; exchange infrastructure; Web application server; and a composite applications framework.
SAP's new Rapid Installer supports small, medium and large configuration settings for business scenarios, SAP said. Customers can scale the system according to the number of portal users and add new hardware when necessary.
The new tool may reduce confusion on how to deploy particular portions of the NetWeaver stack, said Michael Dominy, a senior analyst on business applications and commerce with Boston-based Yankee Group.
SAP is providing an alternative to niche specialty vendors that provide integration software like Fairfax, Va.-based webMethods Inc. and Monrovia, Calif.-based SeeBeyond Technology Corp., Dominy said. Oracle Corp. also has an integration tool for customers running SAP on Oracle's database management system software.
"There are a lot of specialty vendors in the marketplace, and they act as integration brokers within NetWeaver," Dominy said. "SAP is trying to convince their customers to standardize on SAP rather than use another integration vendor."
