Two support arms of the U.S. Navy have gotten under way with SAP technology.

The Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center San Diego (SSC San Diego), a Naval support detail, has implemented mySAP software with the help of SAP Public Services Inc. and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Meanwhile, the U.S. Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation Division (Navy MWR) installed mySAP components with the help of SAP Systems Integration America (SAP SI America).

SSC San Diego, which is the first of the Navy's four enterprise modernization programs to go live, is a pilot site for warfare center management. Project Cabrillo, as it is called, will use mySAP Financials for asset management, financial management, program management, procurement and strategic planning.

By using both mySAP Financials and mySAP Enterprise Collaboration Portals, SSC San Diego employees, business partners and other civilian and defense government agencies can have a single, secure point of access to financial information. The installation simplifies much of SSC San Diego's technical programs by integrating multiple systems and databases.

SSC San Diego determined the value of commercial software for business operations more than two years ago, according to Rik Pierson, director of the Center's ERP Program Management Office.

At the Navy MWR, mySAP Retail and mySAP Human Resources (mySAP HR) have been installed at naval stations in Jacksonville, Fla., and Seattle. This is the first phase in an eight-month global rollout for the Navy MWR to improve existing retail processes and simplify human resource operations for 15,000 employees.

Navy MWR employees will have improved procurement, inventory management and master data management functions with mySAP Retail. In addition, the SAP SI consulting team developed an interface to the current point-of-sale (POS) system that the Navy MWR uses, which allows the POS system and the SAP system to interact in real time.

Meanwhile, SAP SI consultants installed mySAP HR, including Employee Self Service. All the previous data was kept intact during the implementation, according to SAP SI.

The HR project also involved moving the Navy MWR from an outsourced payroll system to an SAP-certified interface, which integrated the Automatic Data Processing Inc. payroll system with mySAP HR. This will increase flexibility and automation of human resources activities, allowing employees to track costs more effectively, SAP SI said.

In the next nine months, the Navy MWR plans to install the mySAP software at its facilities in San Diego and Norfolk, Va.

The Navy MWR administers a variety of recreational, social and community activities on U.S. Navy facilities around the world, including sports and physical fitness activities, child development and youth programs and food and beverage services.

Three other Navy pilot programs are also using SAP software. The Naval Air Systems Command focuses on acquisition program management; the Naval Sea Systems Command addresses regional maintenance work force management and the Naval Supply Systems Command/Naval Air Systems Command zeroes in on aviation supply chain and maintenance management. If the pilot programs succeed, the Navy could move toward a more widespread adoption of commercial software for resource management and planning, SAP Portals said.
