At its annual Sapphire user conference on April 22, SAP will release standard processes aimed at providing guidance and structure for companies implementing and managing service-oriented architecture (SOA) plans.
Dubbed solution operation standards by SAP, they will contain best-practice procedures on how to run the individual processes and explain how SAP Solution Manager tools can be used. Training and services will also be available, according to SAP.
Application management and SAP technology operations are two of the categories included in the release.
Application management processes include root-cause analysis, change request management, processes to optimize remote application support, and a minimum documentation standard for project planning and reporting.
Technology operations processes address activities for administering and monitoring a company's IT environment. The system administration standard describes how SAP technology should be administered, while the system monitoring standard covers monitoring and reporting of IT status.
The 16 standards will be available for download at www.sap.com/supportstandards. SAP does not anticipate further releases, but that could change, depending on customer demand, according to an SAP spokesperson.
"SAP continues to drive additional functionality into Solution Manager (SM), though the integrated nature of SM can make adoption a challenge," said SAP customer Dan Lubin, director of information technology for Danvers, Mass.-based Abiomed. "We'll be looking at this closely as we plan our investments for next year."
The company will also make available SAP Solution Support Enablement, a package of diagnostic tools to support IT environments running multiple technologies and customers with system consolidation or upgrade projects. It includes SAP Test Data Migration Server software for creation of test environments.
Both the standard processes and support enablement product will be part of SAP Solution Manager.
