At Sapphire earlier this year, an SAP executive leaned over and proudly showed me a prototype of the SAP BusinessObjects Strategy Management application, fully rendered on his iPad. While this was a working prototype, the functionality to stream key performance indicators (KPIs) to initiatives, budgeted projects and responsible management was solid and stable.
After months of “drinking their own champagne” internally with the management team, from the CEO office throughout the field sales teams, the SAP BusinessObjects Strategy Management app for iPad was released earlier this month to the Apple App Store. With this release, the Strategy Management iPad app improves organization responsiveness by keeping business users actively engaged in key performance improvement and strategic initiatives -- such as tracking and monitoring balanced scorecard and management by objectives (MBO) efforts -- anytime, anywhere via mobile devices.
SAP has moved steadily into the mobile applications market from simple workflow approval applications for time and expenses and expense reporting, to more sophisticated analytical applications such as sales forecasting and greenhouse gas carbon emissions in its portfolio of OnDemand solutions. Moving to the “C-suite” with the SAP BusinessObjects Strategy Management app for iPad is a logical and needed extension of field and operations capabilities in SAP’s mobility portfolio.
While SAP understands the application will evolve over time -- and some usability preferences still need to be ironed out, such as multisession navigation -- the application allows executives and business decision makers to review their portfolios of key projects, assign tasks, track project status and check the real-time impact of benefits, outcomes and KPI achievement.
While the SAP BusinessObjects Strategy Management app for iPad has embedded comment capability, messaging is further enhanced through the use of other mobile applications -- such as SAP StreamWork -- to embed management discussion and direction while the executive is traveling, multitasking at conferences and events or decompressing in another time zone after a busy day of meetings.
Users will find that the initial download of the SAP BusinessObjects Strategy Management for iPad app comes loaded with a number of rendered examples, templates and reports based on a core sample set of information. A site license for SAP BusinessObjects Strategy Management is required. The iPad app maps to an instance based on consistent login information enabled by SAP’s longstanding single sign-on philosophy.
The SAP BusinessObjects Strategy Management app for iPad and the SAP StreamWork app are both available for free at the Apple App Store (SAP StreamWork is also available on the Google Marketplace). The SAP BusinessObjects Strategy Management application is at the SAP marketplace and has been generally available software for over two years and updated as part of the EPM 10 release earlier this year. It is expected that the Strategy Management app will be available for other platforms such as Google in future releases.
