Analysis:
Is SAP Customer Relationship Management (CRM) a good area to focus on as far as careers? And what are the prospects like for Sales and Distribution (SD) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM)?
Advice:
CRM is an area that has good growth potential over the coming years. It provides a great starting point for a career as a functional consultant with its advanced marketing capabilities. SD is also a good functional area to consider. Ideally, if you are in the position to get training, it's worth pursuing opportunities in both areas to keep your horizons as broad as possible.
As for the PLM market, it has not really taken off in the SAP world yet. But that does not mean there's no career in it. The PLM demand will probably continue to grow as its strategy importance increases. For a person with PLM experience in other areas, training in SAP PLM will poise you for big opportunities as SAP PLM demand grows. Until that happens, however, the market may be hard to break into and you would be best served to follow the PLM opportunities where they arise, SAP or not.
