Analysis:
ABAP has been a major thing in SAP for a long time. But does it make a good professional focus? How does it stack up against Java?

Advice:
Java seems to be the way of the future. Having said that, ABAP is still a necessary and needed skill. But unless you are already working in ABAP, pursuing a career solely in ABAP may needlessly limit your focus area and make you too segmented in your skill set as new technologies prevail.

Will ABAP go the way of the dodo bird? Probably not. Many experts have abandoned the "ABAP is doomed" mantra over the past year or two. In the long run, it seems that SAP will indeed be bi-lingual, which is a good goal for adopt for those looking to make development their chosen niche. Look for experiences and opportunities that will keep you up to speed on both areas; having a large assortment of tools in your toolbox for any given situation is never a bad thing.
