QUESTION POSED ON: 10 June 2003
I have been working with SAP since 1998 from the "inside" of an SMB company. I have good business process experience and am well versed in Basis, FI/CO, MM, SD and some WM processes in our company. I have been the project manager for 2 implementations and 1 upgrade (4.6b). In addition, I am capable of managing a team of consultants as well as my own integration team. I feel I have the project management side down but would like to obtain more functional/technical expertise and do not know where to start. Any suggestions would be helpful.

You have a lot of interesting SAP skills, but you also seem a bit spread out. It would be great for you to hone in on some of your SAP skills and become a niche expert in one of those areas. Your team lead experience is great, but you could use some 4.6C exposure. Of course, 4.7 Enterprise skills would be even better. These days, the best place to start is pretty simple: you start where your employer will let you start. It's not a time to pick and choose from a variety of projects, so go where the hands-on opportunities lie - even if they aren't perfectly aligned with your long term intentions. With extra money and time, you can hone your direction by investing in training that will help you to get the most out of your project work. It's hard to say which areas would be most useful for you, but with the range of logistics areas you have exposure to, and with your financial background, I'm tempted to say APO and supply chain management. That's a growth area within SAP that would draw on all of your skills and also give you a chance to hone in on a marketable, focused expertise.
