EXPERT RESPONSE
SAP has made several forays into Java over the past few years. They have
rolled out a Java-based SAP GUI, developed components external to R/3 in
Java, and are now looking to support Java Server pages within the R/3
application server. At this point, SAP has no design to replace ABAP with
Java or embed Java directives within ABAP. SAP will be adding a Java
virtual machine to their Web Application server, which will allow developers
to create Java Server pages that can interact directly with the R/3
application layer. If you are interested in learning more about Java Server
pages and Enterprise Java in general, I recommend "Professional JSP 2nd
Edition" published by Wrox.
Beyond this, SAP has begun to provide components built as pure Java
applications. However, these are product developments that do not require
developers to have any ABAP experience.
