I am a beginner at BAPIs. My question is this: Whenever a new sales order is
created/changed in SAP, I would like to invoke the standard BAPIs to pass
the data to an external system like webMethods. What are the steps to be followed? Appreciate your answers.

You don't need BAPIs for this, you should use ALE/IDoc technology. Have
the external system subscribe to the sales order message in the ALE
distribution model. For details, check the ALE documentation or ask an ALE
consultant.
