To be honest with you: if you do not know much about portals, then it is no use learning any specific portal technology. Portals are tools, like a hammer. You learn to use it because you need it. If a client comes to ask you for portal assistance, it is expected that you are familiar with the theory and will be able to tell if it is useful or not.
