How does asynchronous updating increase R/3 scalability? Also, I want to learn more about R/3 scalability in general.
Could you explain a few case scenarios or examples of update troubleshooting from a Basis point of view?

Finally, could you direct me to a book on update processes?

EXPERT RESPONSE
Transaction SM13 and SM12 are the transactions which can be used to monitor and troubleshoot the update processes.

Different functions to verify the locking process are available via transaction SM12, menu option Extras, such as statistics, diagnosis, diagnoses in update (which simulates an update).

Many functions to monitor the update processes are available through transaction SM13, Diagnosis.

The handbook, SAP R/3 System Administration, published by SAP-PRESS is the bible on SAP system administration. I would recommended to anyone into SAP Basis.
