QUESTION POSED ON: 22 July 2007
Currently I have been working on SAP 4.7 ABAP/4 for the last two years at an automotive company (end user).

I also look after MM and SD functional modules and have configured and customized various workflows like new Plant creation, new workflow for sales and service and I am also responsible for daily activities and problems relating to MM and SD.

The company is currently in the process of upgrading to SAP NetWeaver.

My question is, since I have a master's degree in computers, will I be able to find a good job in an IT company as a functional or techno-functional consultant?

Also, will pursuing a post graduate diploma through distance learning like a one year PG diploma in CRM enhance my career prospects and give me an edge?

EXPERT RESPONSE
First, let me tackle your last question: since you already have hands-on experience in SAP, I don't know that getting another diploma in CRM will make that much of a difference in your SAP career. Having said that, I am a big fan of continuing education so I never want to discourage people from furthering their professional growth.

What I can tell you is that most of the successful SAP consultants I have worked with over the years do make a point of getting all kinds of continued trainings and certifications under your belt.

As for your question about whether consulting firms would hire you given your current background, I think you're making that question harder than it actually is. Ultimately, the only way for you to find out the answer is for you to put you resume out there, discretely if you need to, and see if you get any interest or feedback. That will give you a better idea if you are ready for consulting or not. But I would suggest, given what you are doing now, that it might be best for you to stay at your current company, at least through the NetWeaver upgrade cycle. Once you have those marketable NetWeaver skills, you might be in a better position to give consulting a shot. Two years of ABAP isn't a lot, but combined with a NetWeaver upgrade, it might be enough to get your consulting career going.
