QUESTION POSED ON: 08 June 2007
SAP offers SRM 210 and SRM 260, two courses for aspiring SRM consultants. Are these the only two that can be taken or is there an academy for SRM like other modules? Also, what additional areas would it be beneficial to have knowledge in (i.e. MDM)?

>
SAP does not provide an academy course schedule for SRM. Customers have SAPSRM, SRM210, SRM260 and SRM270 courses available to them. Courses 260 and 270 both deal with content management using either CCM or the new SAP MDM catalog solution. Note: SAPSRM is the overview course for SRM.

I believe the skill set for being an SRM solution consultant has changed over time. As SAP has enhanced the solution functionality from purely focusing on operational procurement to include sourcing, contract management, category management and e-sourcing, the skill set needed to support the SRM solution has drastically changed.

Most of the consultants still primarily have exposure to the operational procurement side as a large number of organizations have only implemented and benefited from implementing that portion of SRM -- more commonly known as EBP.

Today I believe that consultants that want to provide valuable consulting to their clients need to not only have experience in the configuration of the core EBP solution but also: SUS, Bidding Engine and either CCM or SRM-MDM. Having a core understanding of these solutions covers the core SRM components. However, the following are also very important: The SAP NetWeaver platform overall, which includes the enterprise portal, business intelligence and the exchange infrastructure. I'm not saying you should be knowledgeable in the configuration of these components, but you should understand how these integrate to SRM and the benefits and challenges that would impact a project timeline.

In addition, workflow is a core technology and SRM is so tightly knit with workflow that it becomes important for any SRM consultant. I would not focus on getting knowledge in workflow development, but rather the concepts of workflow in SAP -- the framework and the ability to configure the standard SRM templates.

With all the integrated components today in SRM, security is another key area. An understanding of BAdI development is also very useful. Again, don't focus on developing code, but try to understand what different avenues there are for clients to add their business logic to their standard SAP solution so that it can better fit into their organization and requirements.

With SRM 6.0, SRM consultants will recognize a growing need for understanding the enterprise portal, workflow, and Web Dynpro technologies as they are tightly integrated into the overall solution.
