QUESTION POSED ON: 13 April 2006 I just read a news story on SearchSAP.com that referenced an analyst who said, 'large software vendors are 12 to 18 months away from catching up to the established pure-play business process management vendors.' Would you agree or disagree with this statement?

As an analyst, I have to caution you about believing everything that analysts say. Sometimes we get it right, sometimes we get it wrong. And often we disagree with one another, to the further confusion of users and vendors. With a nod to the latter case, here's my answer: Most customers are more than 12 to 18 months away from catching up to the marketing hype around business process management. It's true that there are best-of-breed vendors who are challenging the ascendancy of the larger software vendors. But what really matters is where the customers sit on this issue, and, in my opinion, the "Year of BPM" is still a few years off.
