QUESTION POSED ON: 19 December 2005
Hi Jon,

I have been reading your career advice and I usually agree with you. Currently I want to make a change and do something different than what I have been doing for almost a decade -- that is, management consulting in the area of sales and CRM. As for my education background, I earned an MBA from a premier school and performed data analysis, and Sales Force/Area/Product streamlining.

I believe that SAP will continue to do well in coming years, especially with mySAP, so I decided to take the SAP route to enter into the ever-changing and challenging technology market.

My question to you: what module should I start with? Considering my overall background, CRM seems to be the best bet, but since I have couple of life cycle experiences with SD from the implementation-configuration stage, do you think a certification route with SD to CRM is a good idea? Both certifications is not only an expensive bet, but also a time-consuming process. I am going to move to the US in 2006 with certifications.

Your plan sounds good, and your research and thought has paid off. I think you will do well in the CRM area. I would emphasize CRM certifications over SD. As you point out, certifications are expensive. It's better to get certified in the area you are trying to break into than the area you are already workin in. So, get the CRM certifications, and rely on your SD skills to get you through in the meantime. I bet you'll do just fine.
