I'm interested in a career in SAP XI. What skills are required? It is programmatic or config. (like BW)? If it's programmatic, how much ABAP/Java programming skill is required? I know the basics of ABAP and Java.

XI is a middleware technology, so it is a pure developer or admin job. To be an XI consultant you must have a thorough understanding of SAP Basis and be proficient in programming both ABAP and Java. Currently XI is not a starting point for newbies in SA technologies, unless they bring a huge portion of middleware know-how.
