It is possible to have multiple instances of SAP BW running multiple data mart components. This model is recommended if you have an ultra-high volume warehouse (ranging into tens of terabytes). Such a high volume EDW (Enterprise Data Warehouse) system comes with its share of challenges.

b) Very high network traffic
c) Landscape synchronization issues
These days the database engines are highly optimized at the Kernel Level. You should look at single-server installations first, along with logical and physical partitioning implemented. Multi-server data mart scenarios should only be evaluated after evaluating single-server data marts.
