QUESTION POSED ON: 13 October 2004
I started my career as a ABAP consultant and was involved in 3 full life cycle implementations. Then I moved into integration product development (integrating SAP with PeopleSoft and Oracle APPs). I have good experience on BAPI's/RFC's/IDoc's and ALE. I was involved in a SAP Enterprise Portal Pilot project and later shifted into SAP BW. Now I am working in BW. Could you please suggest what would be the best career path for me down the line 2-5 years? Thanks for your suggestions.

It's very hard to see one year ahead in SAP, much less five. I don't know if I can make five year predictions in SAP for anybody. But I *can* tell you that I recommend continuing to pursue BW as SAP moves into the "NetWeaver era." You might want to note that BW version 3.5 is tied directly into the NetWeaver platform. So, if you can continue to pursue BW and hopefully get that 3.5 experience, you can get exposure to NetWeaver ahead of the game and build on your BW skills at the same time. I think this would be a very marketable combination of skills and would serve you well for at least the next two years. Two years from now, e-mail me again and we'll figure out the next two. :)
