From a coding point of view, how is a BAPI different than an RFC function module?

Unless you use object-oriented proxies (send an email to tgs@arasoft.de if you are interested in proxies for Java,) there is absolutely no difference: you invoke BAPIs as regular RFC-enabled Function Modules (RFMs).
