QUESTION POSED ON: 31 July 2001

We are currently planning to move from one Vendor hardware platform running NT to another vendor platform running NT. We believe that the most efficient and controlled method of doing so is to use the SAP provided Migration Tools for Homogenous Migration. There has however been consideration of achieving the Same result by either simple file copies NT to NT or database export import. Are there any issues related to any of these approaches that make one better than the other.

The easiest way is thru a Homogeneous System Copy. Here is a summary of what needs to be done:
1. Install the OS on the new server.
2. Install the RDBMS on the new server.
3. Copy the database files from the old to the new server. You could also perform a database restore.
4. Install R/3. Depending on the R/3 release you can use a template (.R3S) to by-pass the database creation process. Otherwise, you can create your own.
5. Copy all or selected directories of usrsap from the old server.
6. Check the new R/3 server.

Obviously you do have to plan when in the process you change the hostname so the migration is transparent to the user community. I cover Homogeneous System Copies in my book "SAP Basis Administration". If you can please drop by my website:
