QUESTION POSED ON: 09 July 2004
Hi Jon,
I am a developer with about 1 year of experience in product development using C/C++.

Recently, I have launched into developing Java based Connectors for an SAP system. I find this interesting as I am striving to integrate various modules of SAP with identity management or database products. This is giving me sound exposure in SAP fundamentals, Java (JCo), and understanding of BAPIs and RFCs.

Over the next 3-4 years, what career plan do you suggest for me so that I am able to use my present know-how to its full advantage?

Thanks in advance.
Best Regards,
Suddhashil Sarkar

EXPERT RESPONSE
The SAP development platform is evolving too rapidly right now to make any three or four year projects on where you should be going. So much of this depends on your own individual career goals and aspirations anyway. But I will say that you are in the "sweet spot" of SAP programming right now, and the more you can build on SAP Web development, SAP Web services, and Java-related skills, the better off you are. In a nutshell, keep on doing what you're doing. Worry less about what's going to happen four years from now, and focus more on making sure you are always getting quality project experience and not sitting on the bench or stuck on a maintenance mode project. Some working knowledge of ABAP development is also recommended. Remember that ABAP isn't going away - SAP has just learned how to "wrap" it better and hide it from its SAPPHIRE presentations. But a well-rounded SAP developer is not afraid of ABAP code.
