QUESTION POSED ON: 09 July 2004
Jon, I have experience as an architect (Construction/Building Industry) and a designer (Furniture Mfg Industry). (CPIM Other than the above I have good programming knowledge, understand database concepts and have also worked as a programmer in GIS based projects. I have also good experience in Industrial Design CAD, CAM software.

All this makes 5 years of experience. IT always has interested me. Does a career in SAP- EC&O, PP-GIS, etc. as a functional consultant make sense? Is this a profile for me? How good is this market?

EXPERT RESPONSE
It sounds like you have a very interesting background in the building industry. I like how you are trying to connect that experience with the areas of SAP that would draw on those skills! I wish more of my readers would do that, because that's the key to breaking into SAP and having a coherent, long-term career path. The challenge, of course, is that the market you are targeting is small. I've been involved in SAP recruiting, either as a manager or as a recruiter, for a decade, and I've seen only one or two PP-GIS, or SAP E&C requirements. If I were you, I would carefully research this market and figure out the scope of the opportunities. It may be that this niche is just too narrow to be useful. Once again, I recommend doing the most practical thing: go to the "Careers" section of this web site, type in some of the keywords above, like PP-GIS, and see what kind of jobs come up. Get a feel for the kinds of experiences required. In your case, you really need to get your hands on a list of all the SAP users in the construction and building industry. Applying to those companies will give you the best chance to break into the field. Of course, getting your hands on this type of info is easier said than done. But if you're determined to obtain it, and you're resourceful in your efforts, you should be able to build a "working list" that will be the key companies you will need to approach. Be prepared to relocate if you want to pursue this dream.
