QUESTION POSED ON: 12 April 2004
My name is Jafar. I reside in the USA. I did not atttend college. However, five years ago, I started in the IT field, by taking Microsoft and Cisco Cert's. I have been in the Wide Area Networking of Cisco, mainly in voice-over IP for the last three years. I am getting tired of the low salaries and the networking field in general.
What advice do you have for someone who is trying to break into SAP Basis? What do you suggest I read for now, until I get proper training? I have seen NT Basis books and Unix-based Basis books. Any ideas?

EXPERT RESPONSE
Your idea to package your network skills in an ERP wrapper in the hopes of more lucrative compensation is certainly a smart one. Anytime you can gain enterprise-level experience within an ERP environment, you should be able to make your overall skills more marketable. I wouldn't necessarily limit yourself to SAP, though. You might find that other ERP packages also offer some interesting opportunities. But of course if you can pull it off within SAP, that's ideal. The main thing you need to do is simply to find a job that uses your current skills - but for a company that is running on SAP. From there, you can work your way further into SAP from the inside. Easier said than done, but it's a tried and true strategy. Reading books about Basis doesn't necessarily help you get a job interview, but it certainly helps you later in the interview process to show your future managers you've done your SAP homework. As for which Basis book to read, there are a number of quality books and each has its advantages. I'd probably start with a UNIX-Basis book, only because that is the classic SAP environment. Remember also that SAP is shifting in technical architecture from classic Basis to NetWeaver. I don't think there are many NetWeaver books yet, but this web site does a nice job with NetWeaver coverage.
