QUESTION POSED ON: 05 May 2005
Thank you very much for your exceptional career advice to tons of people. Bravo. I wish I found this site couple of years ago.

I have around 13 years of pure mainframe experience with ABAP 3.0 certification in 1998 after undergoing training with an SAP partner academy. After my certification I couldn't pursue a career in SAP due to personal reasons. I am now seriously thinking of getting into SAP. I do have a little MRP II experience which was again developed with mainframe systems almost 10 years back. Which SAP path you suggest? I'm seriously thinking of taking courses in BW and NetWeaver and try my luck in the SAP market.

EXPERT RESPONSE
Glad you've enjoyed the column. I like the idea of combining BW and NetWeaver skills. What you want to do is to avoid becoming a standard ABAP programmer. There are enough ABAP programmers out there already, and you always run the risk of being "outsourced" when you are doing generalized SAP programming. But, if your role can have to more to do with BW, NetWeaver architecture and administration, and Web-based SAP development, that would serve you better. This type of skills focus would draw on the strengths of your technical background without pigeon-holing you into a generic ABAP role. Overall, I like your plan. Breaking into SAP these days requires luck as well as a plan, but you've given this a lot of thought and figured out how your skills might "map" into SAP, so you've got as good a shot as anyone.
