QUESTION POSED ON: 09 December 2004 I am a Networking and Security professional with around nine years of experience in the field of Enterprise IT Infrastructure management. I want to have your expert advice on whether a career shift in SAP Basis or any other areas of SAP where I can make use of existing skills, would be a right decision.

EXPERT RESPONSE
I like the idea of Basis and SAP Security. And I applaud your strategy of taking advantage of your existing skills. Several questions in this batch emphasized wholesale career makeovers, and that's not the best way to break into SAP. The best way is your approach: "map" your current skills into SAP and see where the most relevant intersections are. Obviously, Basis work plays to your strengths, and the continuing expansion of SAP security work might be the specific opportunity you need to get your foot in the door. You may know this already, but as more and more companies are impacted by Sarbanes-Oxley compliance guidelines, security and authorizations takes on every more complexity and importance. Perhaps this can help you to hone your strategy further. Good luck!
