EXPERT RESPONSE
For your first question, your petroleum experience may help you if you target SAP users in the petro-chemical area - and there are a decent number of them. Otherwise, your petroleum background won't be especially useful. In terms of functional areas, I don't know which is best suited for you. I know you don't want to continue on a technical path, but breaking into SAP and breaking into functional work is actually not one career change, but two, and it's hard enough to pull one career change off at a time. Two is very difficult. Why not use your data warehousing experience and try to become a Business Warehouse consultant? Then, down the line, you could work more and more to the "business content" and business process side of BW, and maybe get into other functional SAP areas along the way also.
