QUESTION POSED ON: 13 October 2004
Hi, I have been doing SAP time management for many years. In the last two years, I have worked very infrequently due to not getting many projects. I would like guidance as to what I can possibly do beyond SAP time management. This area is very limited. What does someone with time skills do afterwards?

EXPERT RESPONSE
I agree that time management is a limited niche. I do know a few SAP HR/time management experts that keep themselves busy, but for most SAP HR consultants, time management is a component of a broader set of HR-related implementation skills. It's hard to expand your skills when you're only qualified to work in a very specific area, but many SAP users are doing a lot of things with the HR module, whether it's basic payroll and benefits projects, or more advanced ESS and/or workforce management initiatives. Your best bet is to land a project that will allow you to continue to work in your best area (time management), but will give you exposure to related areas within HR. You may be able to move this process forward by obtaining some new HR certifications. The certifications would expand your knowledge base and they might help you to obtain project roles that focus on time management but include broader HR areas as well. There is no "magic cure" for your career dilemmas, but I do think that your best chance for success is within the HR module, and, given your deep SAP skills, there is certainly still a decent opportunity for you to pull this off. If for some reason you cannot find work outside of time management, remember that you can also help your cause by getting HR experience in either version 4.7, or, preferably, mySAP ERP. Good luck!
