QUESTION POSED ON: 13 October 2004
I am a SD functional consultant with 2 implementation experiences. I have been into OSS for the last 3 months. What are the chances that this experience would be a major point of consideration (or rather a contention) incase I decide to move back into any implementation job? Have I moved in the wrong direction? Or was my idea of being in support for a while to enhance the troubleshooting skills a good one to gain more grasp on the module specified? I am thinking of taking up CRM certification in the meantime to add to my armour of SAP skills.

EXPERT RESPONSE
Excellent question. I believe you are correct on both counts: in the short term, your OSS experience has actually helped you by widening the scope of your knowledge in the SD module. But in the long run, if you continue to work in a OSS capacity, you will no longer be able to obtain functional consulting projects. So, at some point in the next six months, you will need to make some kind of proactive move if you want to remain a viable SAP consultant. But, in the meantime, I agree with your thinking about obtaining a CRM certification. Anything to expand your skills and to build on your knowledge base is a good idea, and the CRM certification could pave the way for an SD-to-CRM certification down the line.
