You need to know NetWeaver to go the Basis route

I am a non-SAP IT professional who is looking to get into SAP. I have been advised by many that Basis administration is the way to go. I would appreciate your insight in this regard. I have an extensive IBM mid-range application development and a DB management background.

There is no one "way to go" in SAP. But I would agree that a technical career path in SAP is better on the systems/database administration side than on the development side, simply because the outsourcing threat is higher on the ABAP side. It seems like you could really go either the Basis or ABAP route based on your skills. But keep in mind that Basis is rapidly shifting to NetWeaver. If you just chase "Basis," you'll be behind the technology curve.

How to get a handle on NetWeaver? Simple: spend more time on SearchSAP.com. SearchSAP.com has a lot of great info on NetWeaver -- from webcasts to news links to expert forums like this one.
