Will MM and SD experience help me become an SAP BW consultant?

Dear Jon,

I have three years of experience in SAP MM and have also worked in SD and WM modules with 3-4 full implementations. I also have SAP certification in MM. I would like to know if it will be a wise move to get certified in BW? Will my past SAP experience help me in upgrading myself as a BW consultant? Also, do I need other technical skills apart from ABAP?

I definitely think that your previous functional background would help you in your BW career. You should get some books on BW and study the product, and you'll see that designing Infocubes and customizing reports draws on a fair amount of functional skills. On the technical side, a bit of ABAP is always helpful.

Remember that if you want to get into BW security, installation, and administration, then those are technical skills beyond ABAP you would need. You don't necessarily need those to succeed in BW, but they are helpful. I would recommend BW security as this is a growing area that isn't too tough technically and could round out your overall skill set nicely. Overall, it sounds to me like you could transition into BW pretty effectively from your background, but you will need to be patient, as there are more roles in BW on the technical than functional side, and it will take you a while to beef up the technical aspects.
