Why isn't everybody using Workflow?

SAP workflow is an excellent tool for getting full value to the organization from SAP investments. Somehow, most of the organizations who have gone for SAP implementations have ignored this aspect and not implemented Workflow at the initial stage.

of the organizations who have gone for SAP implementations have ignored this aspect and not implemented Workflow at the initial stage. This is not correct. I think workflow module should be included at the first stage of implementation itself other wise there will be a resistance at a later stage for this, which may ultimately effect business effectiveness. Your comments please.

Well, you certainly have made an excellent point here. I think the problem in the past has not been so much that workflow has been ?ignored? but simply not understood. There is no argument that Workflow needs to be implemented from the outset in order to maximize its benefits. I feel that the blame lies here with the consultants as much as it has with the clients.

It is very important for the consultants out there to understand all the 'tools'. This means that an effective SAP Technical Consultant needs to be proficient in report writing, dialogue programming, workflow and various other technologies such as ALE, etc. How else can a Consultant recommend an optimal solution? I shudder to think how many 'solutions' are out there which could have been implemented more efficiently if Workflow was used. A lot of these solutions have been implemented poorly because the Consultant did not understand how to use Workflow and conversely the Client did not know to ask for it. The Client needs to take ownership of the delivered solution and understand it fully as much as the Consultant.

I think ultimately the solution lies in forums such as these as well as conferences such as ASUG and SAP Technical Journal. It is these mediums that need to educate the User and Consulting community on the various technologies (including Workflow). This will enable Consulting companies to implement Workflow as part of the overall solution and not as an after-thought, providing a more integrated robust solution to the end-user.
