The Operating System is in most cases linked to a specific hardware vendor. If you choose IBM, your operating system will be AIX. If you go for HP, it will be HP-Unix. There all some white papers out there by the Gartner Group, which compare hardware platforms and operating systems. But these white papers are always sponsored by the hardware vendors themselves. They provide some information but there conclusions should be taken for what they are.
