What is the difference between ALE and EDI?

I did certain configuration on ALE, but still I'm confused about what the basic difference is between ALE and EDI. What I understand is that ALE is basically the link between two separate R/3s (logical system). Does it mean that all logical system interfaces are ALE? Can you help me to understand the difference between two technologies?
