"SAP" stand for System Application Program.
SAP R/3 is an ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system which integrates
most business applications (Sales/Distribution, Material Management,
Production Planning, Controlling, Financial Management, etc.) in one
product. SAP R/3 consists of a presentation server on the client side, the
middle tier Application server and its own repository which consists of the
data model (DDIC) and programs written in a proprietary language called
ABAP/4, and the Database server which runs on various platforms and
databases.
