What does an IDoc look like?

This reader would like to know the format of an IDoc and whether or not he can send data to and from SAP and a non-SAP system. Axel Angeli answers.

I'd like to know the format of an IDoc and whether or not I can send data to and from SAP and a non-SAP system?
The IDoc format is a plain ASCII file with a certain structure. In order to see what an IDoc looks like, have a look in tables EDIDC (header) and EDID4 (data). Every IDoc consists of one header record, followed by the data records. More about technical implementation of IDocs can be found in the book SAP R/3 Guide to Interfaces.
