Updating kernels in SAP production systems

Get the facts on updating kernels in SAP production systems with Bert Vanstechelman, our SearchSAP.com upgrade expert.

My client wants to change and upgrade the R/3 kernel. They had already upgraded from the 4.5B to the 4.7 kernel, and now want to update that kernel. What typically gets affected by changing a kernel in a production system?
An SAP kernel upgrade consists of replacing the SAP executables. Normally no business impact is to be expected.

The SAP kernel is shipped in two parts, a database in-dependent and dependent bundle (naming convention SAPEXE_

VERSION>_ .SAR and SAPEXEDB_ _ .SAR)
