I cannot choose a character format for a field in the Smart Forms editor. I use the drop-down box to select a character format, it populates the box, and then the box is cleared.

As you have found, text node editing in Smart Forms can be a bit tricky at times. For instance, text must be highlighted carefully before assigning a character format to it, and it is possible to inadvertently assign multiple character formats when the wrong one is chosen first from the drop-down box.
In situations where you need precise control, or where the text appears very small, I suggest that you click on the "full screen editor" icon and then switch to the old-style editor (under the "Goto" menu), which shows and allows direct editing of character tags.
