Should we upgrade SAP BW if upgrading to SAP ECC 6.0, CRM 7.0?

I am working with SAP R/3 4.7, SAP CRM 4.0, and SAP BW 3.5.

If we are  upgrading from SAP R/3 to ECC 6.0, as well as from CRM 4.0 to 7.0, do we have to upgrade the SAP BW system as well, or can we continue working with the current system? If we do need to upgrade the SAP BW system, what changes would we need to make?

Generally, SAP BW, CRM and ERP are independent of each other. An upgrade of one system should not impact usage or communication with another. Of course there may always be some features that would only work with a more recent release of the partner system; since SAP BW is normally the client it will work fine with the others unless you access data structures that have been modified in SAP CRM 7.0 or ECC 6.0 releases. But these are minor risks. Some fine tuning will always be needed.
