Although knowledge of Java is not a requirement for an ABAP developer, it is certainly a useful skill to have. ABAP development will not be going away anytime in the near future (if ever!) and I see a continuing strong market for developers with ABAP skills. However, having some background in Java will allow you to understand the wider landscape of enterprise, specifically with customers and employers looking to expand and integrate other applications with SAP.
