I need to build a server component that can be called from ABAP. What is the easiest way to do this?

Building server components with the low-level RFC library in C is not for the faint of heart, so I would recommend you use Java. The SAP Java Connector (JCo) allows you to build both client and server components quite easily. For server components, JCo makes it very simple to run multiple threads so that even heavy workload can be managed. The JCo download (available from http://service.sap.com/connectors) contains all the required documentation and even sample code. And the new 1.1 version (which should be available by the time you read this) adds support for several Unix flavors (including Linux and Solaris) in addition to Windows. If you do not want to experiment yourself, consider registering for SAP's CA926 class which teaches client and server programming with JCo.
