SAP XI is simply a message integration broker tool that excepts messages from somewhere, converts the message through plugable adapters into XML format and stores them in a simple message queue. Then workflow actions can be triggered to perform actions upon the messages ending eventually in sending out a message to somewhere in the universe. So XI does what any of the other over 100 middleware products on the market does.
