The technical path to security expertise is well traveled. However, SAP security implementation is technically quite straightforward and may not provide a challenge to a C++ programmer. While technical expertise is valuable in understanding how security is implemented, an even more important skill in implementing good security and controls is an understanding of functional business processes, reengineering, internal controls and segregation of duties. Perhaps building on your experience in the financial industry would be an effective route to a career in security.
