It it necessary to do a rollup to maintain consistency between a cube and its aggregates?

If we created aggregates on a cube, is it necessary to do a "roll up?" Without the rollup up what would happen?

After you create an aggregate on a cube and activate it, the aggregate tables are filled with summarized data from the cube. If you continue loading new data into the cube, the aggregates and the cube will be inconsistent unless the aggregate tables are updated with new data.

The process which does the update is called the "rollup" process and it is mandatory to do the rollup to maintain the consistency between the cube and its aggregates.
