Is SAP BI/BW the right career area for an experienced software developer?

I have been in the IT field for the last four years, mainly in web development. I am a PHP software developer working as a contractor. For the past year I have worked on two different PHP projects where an SAP database was involved. It was here that I came across SAP BI/BW and was very impressed with it.

I am thinking about learning BW and attempting the SAP NetWeaver BI certification test. Is this the right career move?

Choosing a career in SAP, specifically BW, will be a good career change for you. But finding the first job will be a difficult task. Taking only a few weeks training is not going to land you a job in SAP. It completely depends on the amount of time and effort you put in to acquire the knowledge and expertise in the area. It might take months before you can make a career change to SAP.
